Best LBJ Lake Fishing Guide

Map of LBJ Lake Fishing

Originally (and occasionally still) called Lake Granite Shoals, this lake was renamed after former President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Less than an hour northwest of Austin and only 90 minutes north of San Antonio it is a very popular vacation destinations for both summer visitors and Winter Texans. LBJ is one of the six (6) Highland Chain of lakes on the Texas Colorado River. Running 21 miles between Wirtz Dam and Inks Dam the lake covers 6, 375 acres.

Once a sleepy little fishing lake, in the late 1960’s LBJ was drained and raped by developers of virtually all of the water hycinths, coontail moss, and standing timber which was home and habitat to scores of largemouth and Kentucky spotted bass, crappie, white bass and catfish.

This was accomplised by developers to make it recreational boating friendly. But even after suffering this mindless destruction, LBJ today is one of the most productive fishing lakes on the entire “chain of lakes”.

LBJ is noted for exceptional bass and crappie fishing. Bass in the 4 to 10 lb. range are most plentiful from February through April, but the lake is considered a “numbers lake”, meaning that anglers boat many fish throughout the year. Since the inception of catch and release policies of most (responsible) guides and conservation minded locals, the populations have increased and remain consistently better than someof other lakes. Optimum time for crappie is late March through April, but crappie are accessible during spring summer and fall.

A favorite vacation destination for both summer tourists and Winter Texans, resorts, motels, condos , RV parks and private homes line the shorline in the towns of Kingsland, Granite Shoals and Marble Falls.
