Lake Fork Guide Lanes

If you aren’t a local guide – boating Lake Fork can be quite intimidating. Many of the trees have broken off just below the water’s surface and the current bouy system is inadequate. Replacing a prop or fixing a motor takes time and money, which can ruin that tournament you’ve been planning for months. – lakeforkguidelanes.com

Lake Fork Fishing Report

This week on Lake Fork the water is down about 4 feet but it is rising. The rain has finally arrived. The water temp at the beginning of the week was in the low 60’s but after several cold nights and a couple of inches of rain has crashed into the mid 50’s. It hasn’t really affected the bite yet. We have been catching from 12 -15 fish a day with a big fish in the 6-8 pound range. I thought it was going to bust loose before the full moon but with the weather it will be near the full moon in April before the spawn is in full swing. We have been seeing beds in the upper reaches of the lake but not many to none in the main lake areas. Last year the fish wanted to bed on points and open banks where this year they are in the backs of the pockets. We have been throwing soft plastics like a stick-o. You can fish them without weight or put a split shot just in front of the hook or put the split shot up the line a foot for a mini Carolina rig. How ever you throw it fish it SLOW! If you are in a low light condition or a slight stain to the water throw black and blue. If it is bright blue bird out throw a watermelon or a watermelon red. You wont feel all the bites so watch your line. If it jumps, goes slack all of a sudden, or moves off SET IT! The bigger fish you probably won’t feel. As your bait falls slowly the big fish swim up to it and slurp it in and generally will swim at you. We have also caught fish on a suspending jerk bait, jig and pig, and a drop shot in shallow water, less than 10 foot of water. The wind blown banks are best fished with search type baits. A Rattle Trap, spinner bait, crank bait or a jerk bait can all catch their share of hawgs. With the water down I can’t stress safety enough. Wear your PFD when ever the big motor is on! The water is still COLD and you won’t last long if you fall in. Also with all the stumps up you might think about waxing your boat. A good coat of wax on the side of your hull will go a long way in helping stop the scratches that are inevitable with Lake Fork down. On an oxidized ( non waxed boat) the branch will dig into the gel coat where a waxed boat will slide off of it. Well there you have it so get out and fish! See you on Lake Fork!
